Dorado Schmitt ist ein legendärer Manouche-Zigeunergitarrist aus der Region Straßburg in Frankreich. Schmitt kam 2002 zum ersten Mal in die Vereinigten Staaten und ist seitdem ein Star bei großen Festivals und im Birdland in New York, der Heimat des Django Reinhardt NY Festivals. Er hat mit einigen der bedeutendsten Jazzkünstlern der USA gespielt, darunter James Carter, Paquito D’Rivera, George Benson, Joe Lovano, Harry Allen und vielen anderen.
Schmitt, der mit seinem dünnen Schnurrbart Django ähnelt und ein begnadeter Gitarrist und Geiger ist, erlitt vor Jahren einen schrecklichen Unfall, genau wie Django Reinhardt in seinem Leben. Dorado hatte einen Autounfall, der ihn für lange Zeit ins Koma versetzte und seinen Körper schwer verletzte, aber er erholte sich auf wundersame Weise. Django verlor bei einem Brand in seinem Wohnwagen zwei Finger, was zu seinem unglaublichen Musikstil führte, den er aufgrund seiner besonderen Fingertechnik auf der Gitarre entwickelte. Dorado führt das Erbe von Django mit Hilfe anderer begabter Musiker fort und ist eine Legende des Gypsy Jazz.
Er wurde durch seinen Auftritt in dem Film „Latcho Drom“ bekannt, der die wahre Geschichte der Roma erzählt, die von Indien an die Atlantik- und Mittelmeerküste zogen.
Schmitt wurde am 29. Mai 1957 in St-Avold in Lothringen geboren und wuchs in einer musikalischen Familie auf, insbesondere sein Vater war Musiker. Mit 7 Jahren begann er Gitarre zu spielen. Mit etwa 15 Jahren wandte sich sein Musikgeschmack der Pop- und Rockmusik von Santana oder Jimmy Hendrix zu. 1978 gründete er jedoch das Dorado Trio mit den Musikerkollegen Gino Heplays (Violine) und Hono Winterstein (Gitarre). Er spielte zusammen mit Größen wie Bireli Lagrene, Sochelo Rosenberg und vielen anderen. Dorado gilt als einer der gefragtesten Gypsy-Jazz-Künstler der Branche und spielt mit Musikern dieses Stils auf der ganzen Welt. Schmitt war kürzlich beim „Forever Django”-Konzert in der Carnegie Hall zu sehen.

Schmitt started coming to the United States in 2002 and has been a star attraction at major festivals and at Birdland in NY, home of the Django Reinhardt NY Festival. He has played alongside some of the U.S.’s most important jazz artists, including James Carter, Paquito D’Rivera, George Benson, Joe Lovano, Harry Allen and so many others.
Schmitt, a Django look-alike with his pencil thin mustache, gifted on the guitar and violin, suffered a terrible accident years ago, just as Django Reinhardt did in his life. Dorado’s was a car accident that put him in a coma for a long time and damaged his body, but he miraculously recovered. Django lost two fingers in a fire in his caravan which led to the incredible style of music he created due to his special fingering on the guitar. Dorado carries on the legacy of Django with the help of other gifted musicians and is a legend of gypsy jazz.
He became famous to the general public thanks to his appearance in the film Latcho Drom, telling the real story of the Rom people moving from India to the Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts.

But in 1978 he created the Dorado Trio, with fellow musicians Gino Heplays on violin and Hono Winterstein on guitar. He went on to play alongside the greats Bireli Lagrene, Sochelo Rosenberg and so many more. Dorado stands as one of the most in-demand gypsy jazz artists in the business, playing with musicians in this style all over the world. Schmitt was recently featured at Carnegie Hall’s “Forever Django” Concert.

À joué dans des lieux prestigieux comme le Carnegie Hall,Sfjazz festival ,Kennedy Center,le Birdland et tant d’autres ..Compositeur hors pair ,Son œuvre dont le célèbre morceau Bossa Dorado devenu un standard, est largement reconnue, notamment par le prix Django reçu en 2001.) il sera accompagné de ses deux cousins habituels ,composée de Francko Mehrstein à la guitare et Gino Roman à la contrebasse.
